We're off! Madrid get us underway, attacking from left to right.
Good evening and welcome to our live text commentary of today’s Champions League group stage game between Real Madrid and Tottenham Hotspur at the Bernabeu.
It hasn’t been the best of starts to the season for Madrid, who already find themselves five points behind Barcelona in LaLiga. Despite only losing once so far, Zinedine Zidane’s men are struggling to replicate the excellent form that saw them win the double last time out, although improved recent performances have certainly left everyone at the club feeling a little more calm about their current situation.
They left it late, but Madrid just about managed to squeeze past Getafe on the weekend to pick up their fourth win in five games. The return of Cristiano Ronaldo, who missed the start of the season through suspension, has certainly helped Los Blancos, whilst in-form Isco has continued to impress. Another victory tonight would put them in a commanding position at the top of Group H heading into next month’s return fixture at Wembley.
Thanks to two wins from as many games, Madrid and Tottenham are the only sides in the group to have picked up points so far. The latter battled hard in their opening game at home to Borussia Dortmund before easily managing to get the better of APOEL, and they’ll be feeling quietly confident about their chances of leaving the Spanish capital with a positive result this evening.
Like their opponents, Tottenham head into tonight’s big clash in decent form after suffering a slightly slow start to the new campaign. Saturday’s victory against Bournemouth means they’re now unbeaten in their last nine games, with only Chelsea managing to get the better of them so far this season. As a result, Spurs have suffered just one defeat in their last 17 competitive outings.
It’s over six and a half years since these two sides last met one another in a competitive fixture, with Madrid coming away victorious on both occasions on their way to the semi-finals of that season’s Champions League. Tottenham have come a long way since then, however, and, due to their opponents’ slightly underwhelming form, arguably head into today’s game with as good a chance as ever of coming away victorious.
There’s just under 15 minutes left to go until kick-off, so let’s have a look at how the two teams will be lining up this evening…
Tottenham Hotspur substitutes: Vorm, Walker-Peters, Foyth, Rose, Trippier, Georgiou, Son.
Tottenham Hotspur XI (4-4-2): Lloris; Aurier, Alderweireld, Sanchez, Vertonghen; Sissoko, Dier, Winks, Eriksen; Llorente, Kane.
Real Madrid substitutes: Casilla, Hernandez, Nacho, Ceballos, Marcos Llorente, Vazquez, Asensio.
Real Madrid XI (4-3-1-2): Navas; Hakimi, Varane, Ramos, Marcelo; Kroos, Casemiro, Modric; Isco; Benzema, Ronaldo.
Zinedine Zidane has decided to make five changes to the Madrid side that started the 2-1 victory away to Getafe, with Keylor Navas, Raphael Varane, Casemiro, Luka Modric and Isco coming into the starting line-up to replace Kiko Casilla, Nacho, Lucas Vazquez, Marcos Llorente and Marco Asensio, respectively.
Meanwhile, Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino has made three alterations to the team that featured in their last outing, with Kieran Trippier, Dele Alli and Heung-Min Son making way for Serge Aurier, Moussa Sissoko and Fernando Llorente, the latter of whom is set to start just his second game for the club.
The two sides are making their way out onto the pitch, with just a few minutes to go until kick-off.
HALF-TIME: REAL MADRID 1-1 TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR
Tottenham were only two minutes away from heading into the half-time break with a well-earned one-goal lead, but a moment of madness from Aurier means Madrid are back in the game and looking dangerous once again. Up until then, the visitors had done well to sit back and soak up the pressure being put on them, with the hosts leaving pockets of space available to counter into. Pochettino will be happy with how they've performed so far, however, and the second half looks set to be just as closely fought as the first.
The two teams are making their way back out on to the pitch ahead of the start of the second half. Neither side have made any substitutions during the half-time break.
FULL-TIME: REAL MADRID 1-1 TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR
A huge roar erupts from the small group of Tottenham fans camped in the corner of the stadium, and it's no wonder why. Their team put in an impressive defensive performance to come away with a well-earned draw, and it's a result that means it'll still all to play for when the two sides meet once again in two weeks' time. Tottenham sat deep and defended well to frustrate Madrid, who saw plenty of the ball but struggled to carve out chances on goal.
Both sides could have come away with the win, however, after being presented with excellent chances to score. Benzema was somehow denied by Lloris at point-blank range before Kane had a wonderful low shot tipped round the post by Navas. However, in the end, a draw is arguably the fairest result, and it keeps the two teams tied on points at the top of the group.
