SHOULD BE THREE! Mainz carved open again as the game is blown wide open here with the hosts throwing everyone forward. Yarmolenko is sprung forward and draws all the attention before laying it off for Dahoud, but the substitute sends his first-time effort straight at Zentner despite all sorts of time and space to get a shot off from 12 yards!
90'
N. Şahin enters the game and replaces Raphaël Guerreiro.
Nuri Sahin replaces Guerreiro for the final minutes.
89'
S. Kagawa has scored a goal for Borussia Dortmund! Assist by P. Aubameyang.
Terrific work from Aubameyang to serve that up on a platter for Kagawa, as he picks up the assist.
THAT SETTLES IT! Aubameyang the architect, Kagawa the finisher, and Dortmund are off to a winning start under Peter Stoger, surely now! Aubameyang collects a ball over the top, capitalising on an error by Frei, rounds the keeper and unselfishly plays it back across for Kagawa who just couldn't miss.
86'
Mainz need to dig deep here. They're getting very sloppy in possession and they have been very lucky not to be punished, as Dortmund have just lacked the sharpness necessary to pounce. Time is running out on the hosts as they are in danger of being dragged into the thick of the relegation battle.
84'
Zentner collects a corner and quickly starts his side forward on the break, but Schmelzer shows impressive pace to get across with cover, forcing Brosinski into a foul. Back the other way come Dortmund, but Guerreiro disappointingly lifts his effort well over the bar.
82'
Into the final 10 minutes now and Dortmund are looking in control again. They have really upped their desire in the second half, while Mainz have slipped up and were paid dearly for losing their focus temporarily. Dortmund needed to score first, and it's quite incredible how much actually doing so has done for their confidence.
80'
ZENTNER KEEPS IT IN REACH! Great play from Dortmund in attack, after a long spell without so much as a sniff in the final third. Yarmolenko tees up Kagawa expertly at the end of it, but the Japan international is thwarted from point-blank range as Zentner did so well to spread himself and keep Mainz in it!
78'
STAT: Mainz average 0.73 points per game vs. Dortmund – they’re only worse off vs. Bayern (0.65).
76'
G. Holtmann enters the game and replaces R. Quaison.
Mainz make their third and final change here as striker Gerrit Holtmann comes on at the expense of Robin Quaison.
Minute
Description
74'
LIFTED OVER! Toljan far too complacent there in defence, as he gifts Diallo all sorts of space on the edge of the penalty area. The defender would have been wise to send in a cross, but opts to go for goal himself as he fails to hit the target.
72'
Mainz are looking much more bullish here since the change in shape. They're getting forward with great urgency now, and it has Dortmund dropping very deep in defence. The visitors need to break out from their own end, or this will be a very tense finish.
70'
Mahmoud Dahoud enters the game and replaces C. Pulišić.
A disappointing night comes to an early conclusion for Pulisic, as he's replaced here by Mahmoud Dahoud.
WASTEFUL! Brosinski is teed up for a strike as Mainz break forward in numbers, but he squanders what was shaping up to be a very threatening attack, as he lifts his first-time effort miles over the bar.
68'
STAT: Dortmund are without a win in eight top-flight matches – their worst run since February-April 2000 (as part of a 14-game wait for a victory). Only Cologne (2) have taken fewer points across the last eight matchdays than Borussia (3).
66'
SMART SAVE! Balogun rises to meet a corner, heading towards the far post, but it takes a slight nick of Toprak which takes the sting out of it just enough to allow Burki to get across and collect. Play is brought to a halt following the save, as Toprak has picked up a knock here, grabbing his back.
64'
A. Maxim enters the game and replaces G. Donati.
A second change for Mainz here as they switch from a 3-5-2 to a 4-3-3, with Alexandru Maxim replacing Giulio Donati.
62'
Mainz are looking more vulnerable now, their confidence surely shaken by conceding that opening goal. They need to open up a little bit more here and get back to the direct attacking play they managed in the first half, that had Dortmund looking fragile in defence.
60'
It's worth noting that Dortmund have used 26 players in this Bundesliga campaign as injuries have ransacked their side. The only club to use more? Peter Stoger's former team, Cologne. The coach is getting into a very similar scenario here, with the looming winter break sure to prove beneficial to nurse Dortmund back to health.
58'
STRAIGHT AT ZENTNER! Dortmund getting back to their best here, as they negotiate a big chance through some lovely interplay and pace on the front foot. Yarmolenko plays Guerreiro through on the end of it with a lovely backheel, but his effort from a tight angle is sent straight at the keeper!
57'
It is a bit harsh on Mainz, it must be said, as their resistance has shown little signs of breaking. They have refused to acknowledge their supposed inferiority, but they have been pegged back here and that could prove costly if it sparks Dortmund's confidence.
55'
S. Papastathopoulos has scored a goal for Borussia Dortmund!
DORTMUND HAVE THE BREAKTHROUGH! Relief for BVB as they jump out in front in Mainz! Sokratis bounces a composed finish in at the far post after Toprak's header off a corner rattled off the near post! Oh how they needed that!
54'
STAT: Mainz have beaten Dortmund just once in the last seven and a half years (2-0 in September 2014 thanks to Okazaki’s strike and a Ginter own goal).
52'
Pulisic has been starved of goals and assists of late in the league, last factoring in on a goal in September against Hamburg, and he's presented with a good chance here following some clever build-up play, but he skies his effort from 15 yards!
50'
Dortmund continue to knock it about harmlessly near the halfway line, and they remain far too compliant with having to be negative in possession, as Mainz press eagerly off the ball.
48'
Early on here, Dortmund are building on the 62 per cent possession they enjoyed in the first half, but it's all very pedestrian from them still. There doesn't seem to be a change in their approach, or it's not evident yet at least if there is, while the urgency remains non-existent.
46'
A. Hack enters the game and replaces J. Gbamin.
Mainz make one switch at the back, with Alexander Hack making just his second appearance of the season, replacing Jean-Philippe Gbamin.
Back underway in the second half!
45' +1
HALF-TIME: MAINZ 0-0 BORUSSIA DORTMUND.
45'
There will be one minute added on at the end of this first half.
43'
STAT: Mainz are yet to win a Bundesliga game on matchday 16 (D6, L5; F2, A11). They are also on a seven-game wait for a goal on matchday 16.
41'
INCHES WIDE! Out of nothing, Dortmund nearly pounce! That's the threat of Aubameyang, who can strike from out of nowhere. He's played through here with Diallo keeping him onside, but he has to stretch to get a shot off, and that sees is effort drift wide.
39'
A free-kick is won by the visitors in a dangerous area to whip in a cross, but Mainz, as they have done for the majority of this first half, are first to it. Latza is the one on hand to make the clearance, and their quick pressing that follows forces Dortmund to retreat.
37'
Dortmund's possession has dropped from 67 per cent to just under 60 now, and very little of that is coming in the final third. They have hardly spent any time getting after this Mainz defence, and that needs to change if they are to find their first Bundesliga win in nearly two and a half months tonight.
35'
Aubameyang has hardly been involved in the match thus far, left isolated up top. Pulisic's involvement has been similarly non-existent, though for very different reasons. The USA international looks timid and disinterested in sticking himself in, which has seen his time in possession limited as a result.
33'
It hasn't been a very open encounter in this first half, with Mainz doing well to congest things in midfield. Dortmund have shown little urgency to counteract that, too. Mainz have pushed on well, but they have lacked the required quality in the final third.
31'
Dortmund are coming across a bit toothless in midfield. They're not asserting themselves in the challenge, and it's allowed Mainz to transition smoothly from defence to attack. Where's the fighting spirit? Tactics can be changed repeatedly, but if you don't have the desire, the results will not come.
29'
STAT: Peter Stoger, who was fired by Cologne just one week ago, is yet to lose his first league match in charge of a club (W3, D3).
27'
Just over! Diallo does well to meet a cross in from the left, moments after a free-kick, but can't direct his header on target! Had that been on target, it certainly would have been a problem for Burki.
25'
Mainz have been better in most aspects of this match so far, with the exception of possession. Every time Dortmund look to be in the ascendency, the hosts respond with a better spell of their own. Stoger will be expecting more from his side, surely.
23'
Great defending from Diallo, who does very well to stay with Yarmolenko in the penalty area, the Dortmund striker a bit too hesitant to pull the trigger there and it cost him. Perhaps if that opened for him on his stronger left foot, it would have had a different ending.
21'
Concentrated possession here for Mainz, something they have managed little of thus far. They're knocking it around confidently, and why wouldn't they be - Dortmund have hardly looked intimidating in any area of the pitch through the opening 20 minutes.
19'
STAT: This is the quickest that Borussia Dortmund have changed bosses within a season for 33 years (Friedhelm Konietzka after nine matchdays). Bosz averaged 1.5 points per Bundesliga game in charge of Dortmund – the worst return among BVB bosses since Thomas Doll (1.3).
17'
Dortmund have temporarily abandoned their patient approach as they go for a more direct one with a ball over the top, and it results in a corner. The subsequent delivery stays alive in the area and comes to Aubameyang, but his acrobatic volley is sent wide of the far post.
15'
More possession here for Dortmund, but they're struggling to advance the ball into the final third. The bulk of their passing is coming just inside the halfway line, as Mainz have done well to keep organised.
13'
LIFTED OVER! Serdar again! He's getting into all the right areas as Mainz issue warning after warning, but he again fails to capitalise, this time lifting a volley over from in close after the ball fell kindly to him from a cross in from the left.
11'
Mainz have settled in better in these opening stages, looking far more threatening despite a small disadvantage in the possession stats. The hosts have had three attempts at goal, all through Serdar, while Dortmund are still in search of their first.
9'
STAT: Dortmund have lost just one of their last 14 Bundesliga matches against Mainz (W11, D2).
7'
How about that effort?! Much better this time around from Serdar, who does brilliantly to collect the ball and release it quickly, not allowing Dortmund to close down on him. The forward strikes the ball with great ferocity, and it leaves Burki rooted to his spot, but he rattles his effort off the crossbar!
5'
Dortmund has not won a Bundesliga match since the end of September, and even with the change at coach, you can see the pressure weighing down on these players. It will be up to Peter Stoger to restore their confidence and get them back on track.
3'
Serdar has an early go for Mainz, capitalising on their direct approach, but lifts his strike over the bar. Dortmund quickly settle in, however, and enjoy a prominent spell in possession, with Yarmolenko looking dangerous out on the right.
1'
AND THEY'RE OFF! Mainz in red and white as they get the match underway, attacking right to left, with Dortmund in yellow and black.
Hello and welcome to the OPEL ARENA for live coverage of this midweek Bundesliga match as Borussia Dortmund begin life without Peter Bosz when they visit Mainz.
The struggles Borussia Dortmund have been enduring have been highly publicised, with three points and no victories in their last eight Bundesliga matches, but they will be hoping the coaching change will provide them with the spark they desperately need.
Peter Bosz was a highly sought-after commodity following his work with Ajax last season, but the experiment in Dortmund was very much a failed one, lasting less than half the season. In steps Peter Stoger.
Stoger was dismissed himself just one week ago by Cologne, but despite the bottom-club’s struggles this season he remains one of their most successful coaches in history, guiding the club to Europe this season. Now can he fix the Black-and-Yellows?
Mainz are struggling themselves, though they have lost just three of their last 10 matches after suffering four defeats from their first five to open the season. Despite their recent upswing, they sit just one point up on the bottom-three and need to capitalise at home tonight against a reeling Dortmund side.
Sandro Schwarz makes just one change to his side from the 2-2 draw in Leipzig at the weekend, as striker Emil Berggreen comes in to partner Suat Serdar, replacing Gerrit Holtmann.
Peter Stoger's first Dortmund XI sees him make three changes from the weekend's defeat to Werder Bremen, though he keeps the same formation. Omer Toprak come into defence, while Jeremy Toljan and Julian Weigl are restored in midfield, replacing Neven Subotic, Marc Bartra and Mahmoud Dahoud.
Goalless at the break in Mainz, as Borussia Dortmund have a timid and toothless feel to them as they begin life under Peter Stoger. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang came closest for the visitors late on, while Suat Serdar rattled the frame of the goal for Mainz. Everything to play for after the break!
That's all for our live coverage, thanks for following along. Goodbye!
Borussia Dortmund pick up their first Bundesliga victory since September 30 as Sokratis Papastathopoulos and Shinji Kagawa ensure Peter Stoger's tenure gets off to a winning start in Mainz. It wasn't always convincing - far from it at times - but it's a job done well in the end as the coaching change provides the spark Dortmund so desperately needed.
