Lewis Cook's clever flick gave Smith the space to fire in for Bournemouth and give them a glimmer of hope.
GOAL! Bournemouth are back in it. A neat bit of play on the left of the area allowed Lewis Cook to flick the ball towards the run of Adam Smith. He takes a touch before unleashing a dipping effort towards the near post and beyond the motionless Dubravka. Game on!
79'
A wonderful pass by Perez allows Atsu to run into acres of space. He has room to shoot at an angle but opts to try and slot the ball into the path of Ritchie, but it is intercepted by Steve Cook. Should have shot.
78'

Final change for Bournemouth as Callum Wilson is replaced by Jermain Defoe.
71'
CLOSE! Gayle powers the free kick straight into the wall but it trickles through towards the edge of the six yard box. Perez is the quickest to react but can only chip the ball over the bar, under pressure from a defender.
70'
Newcastle come forward. Gayle does well to roll the ball into space for Atsu on the edge of the box but the substitute's shot is well blocked. Newcastle free kick though, around 20 yards from goal.
66'
King charges down the right wing again and his whipped cross looks dangerous, but Dubravka dives quickly to claim the ball. Good work from the Newcastle stopper.
64'
C. Atsu enters the game and replaces Kenedy.
First Newcastle change as Kenedy is replaced by Christian Atsu.
63'
L. Mousset enters the game and replaces R. Fraser.
Bournemouth have turned up the tempo a little bit and they are starting to have a little bit more fortune in the final third. Fraser's first-time cross is a good one and it finds Ake in space, but his header is just wide of the right post.
Ryan Fraser is replaced by Lys Mousset in Bournemouth's second change of the afternoon.
60'
King is inches away from meeting a low pass in the centre of the box but DeAndre Yedlin is there just ahead of him to hammer the ball clear. Better from the Cherries but they have still yet to really test Dubravka in the Newcastle goal.
57'
King makes a good run down the left and passes low towards the edge of the box. It is left by two Bournemouth players before finding Ryan Fraser, who's shot is over the crossbar.
55'
Good work from Steve Cook as he wrestles away Gayle in a one-on-one situation to clear the danger. All Bournemouth in these opening 10 minutes though. Newcastle look content to sit back and try and catch Howe's men on the break.

We are back underway and Bournemouth have a mountain to climb if they are to find a way back into this. They were toothless in the first half.
45' +1
D. Gayle has scored a goal for Newcastle United! Assist by Ayoze Pérez.
Ayoze Pérez's low pass slips through the hands and legs of Begovic to allow Gayle a simple tap in from barely a yard out.
GOAL! Poor from a Bournemouth perspective as Nathan Ake dawdles and gives Newcastle a second chance after a corner. It is swung towards the back post for Perez, who fires a low pass across the face of goal. Asmir Begovic looks to have it covered but he inexplicably lets is slip through his legs, where Dwight Gayle is waiting to tap the ball once again into an empty net.
43'
Charlie Daniels has a yard of space on the left of the Newcastle box, but his left-footed effort is fired high and wide.
41'
It has been good defending from Benitez's men so far as they have limited Bournemouth to half chances, most of which have been snap shots from range. Only one of their shots so far have been on target.
39'
Bournemouth finally come forward, this time down the left wing. The initial cross is cleared but only as far as the edge of the box, where Gosling is on hand to fire a half-volley towards goal. Straight over the bar though.
35'
Its all gone a bit flat in the last five minutes or so. All the play is in midfield and neither side seem able to retain possession.
32'
Bournemouth try to work something down the right wing once more but Simon Francis's whipped cross is beyond the reach of Stanislas. Goal kick.
30'
Newcastle are brimming with confidence now as they retain possession with relative ease, with Shelvey throwing in a neat little turn and heel-flick for good measure.
27'
Newcastle are defending well as Bournemouth look to work their way into the box. The home side have still yet to create any real chances so far.
24'
The corner is swung in deep and cleared as far as Stanislas on the edge of the box. He has space to shoot but it is straight over the bar again.
23'
Better from Bournemouth as they earn the first corner of the game. Lewis Cook's clever lay off allowed Stanislas to run into the box, but his low shot /cross was blocked out of play.
20'
Another Magpies attack can only be cleared as far as Ritchie, who tries a curling effort from just outside the box, which flies narrowly wide of the left post.
19'
Newcastle are well on top now and another long pass by Shelvey finds Kenedy charging down the right wing. This time the low cross is just behind Gayle and Bournemouth can clear.
17'
D. Gayle has scored a goal for Newcastle United!
GOAL! Newcastle had begun to grow into the game and they get their reward. Jonjo Shelvey finds Ritchie charging down the right wing with an excellent run. His low cross towards the six-yard box causes a mixup between defender and goalkeeper, allowing Dwight Gayle to coolly back-heel the ball into the open net.
14'
Kenedy takes it, curling his attempt high over the near post. Neither side have managed to create anything clear cut so far.
13'
A good run from Matt Ritchie and he is brought down by Nathan Ake. Newcastle have a free kick in a very dangerous position.
11'
Half chances at either end. Callum Wilson first got on the end of a near post corner but his low shot was well saved by Martin Dubravka. At the other end, Perez fired a volley from the edge of the box wide of the right post.
8'
Another attack down the right wing and again its King causing all kinds of problems. His deflected cross drops towards the edge of the box to the feet of Stanislas, who's rushed left-footed short is high over the crossbar.
5'
King has looked dangerous in these opening stages for Bournemouth and he causes problems on the right once more, but this time Junior Stanislas is unable to get his toe to the back post cross. Good start from the Cherries.
3'
That was poor. King gets a second attempt from the right wing to deliver a cross. He finds Dan Gosling with a few yards of space inside the centre of the box, but the midfielder can only fire his free header high over the crossbar.
2'
Bournemouth, in red and black, try to work something down the right wing but get crowded out by the Newcastle defenders, playing all in blue.
1'
Bournemouth get us underway, kicking right to left.
Good afternoon and welcome to our live coverage of today’s Premier League game between Bournemouth and Newcastle United at the Vitality Stadium.
There are four teams between Newcastle and Huddersfield in the final relegation place, but they are still only one point away from danger. The Magpies got an impressive win over Manchester United last time out but they haven’t won back to back Premier League games since September, a statistic Rafael Benitez will be eager to put right.
Bournemouth have never lost a Premier League home game to a newly promoted side and adding to that tally this afternoon would be the first time they have won four consecutive home games in the top flight. The Cherries could have forward Jermaine Defoe return to the squad after recovering from an ankle injury that has kept him out since December, but defender Tyrone Mings remains out.
Bournemouth were well beaten by Huddersfield two weeks ago, but a lack of FA Cup action means they have had two weeks to prepare for the visit of Newcastle this afternoon. Eddie Howe will be looking for a reaction to that 4-1 loss and a victory today could give his side comfortable breathing space from the relegation battle below them.
Like Bournemouth, Newcastle have had two weeks preparation time for this game and Benitez has a near fully fit squad to pick from, with forward Islam Slimani being the only major absentee after he suffered a setback in his recovery from a thigh injury.
There’s just over 15 minutes left to go until kick-off, so let’s have a look at how the two teams will be lining up this afternoon…
Bournemouth XI (3-4-3): Begovic; Francis, Steve Cook, Ake; Fraser, Lewis Cook, Gosling, Daniels; King, Wilson, Stanislas.
Newcastle United XI (4-4-1-1): Dubravka; Yedlin, Lascelles, Lejeune, Dummett; Ritchie, Shelvey, Diame, Kenedy; Perez; Gayle.
Newcastle United substitutes: Clark, Hayden, Manquillo, Joselu, Merino, Darlow, Atsu.
Bournemouth make only one change to the side that lost to Huddersfield two weeks ago, with Joshua King replacing Jordan Ibe on the right-wing. Jermaine Defoe returns from his lengthy injury absence to be named among the substitutes.
Newcastle stick with the same side that beat Manchester United 1-0, with Dwight Gayle leading the line for the Magpies and Ayoze Perez just behind him.
The two sides are making their way out onto the pitch, with just a few minutes to go until kick-off.
HALF-TIME: BOURNEMOUTH 0-2 NEWCASTLE UNITED.
Newcastle are two goals to the good at the break and it has been two very, very simple tap ins for Dwight Gayle. A defensive mixup after Ritchie's good run and cross allowed Gayle to back heel into an empty net, before Perez's low pass across the face of goal rolled between the hands and legs of Begovic, allowing Gayle to roll the ball home from barely a yard out. Bournemouth have been well contained by the away side and have never really looked like scoring.
STAT: Dwight Gayle has now netted 28 league goals since the start of last season, more than twice as many as any other player for Newcastle (Matt Ritchie next on 13).
Both sides are back out on the pitch, ahead of the start of the second half.
FULL-TIME: BOURNEMOUTH 2-2 NEWCASTLE UNITED.
It ends all square at the Vitality Stadium as Bournemouth showed excellent spirit and some quality creative play to fight back in the second half. Adam Smith gave the Cherries hope when his high curling effort found the back of the net. Christian Atsu had the opportunity when one on one with the goalkeeper to secure the three points for Newcastle but opted to pass instead. Bournemouth continued to push for an equaliser and found it on the stroke of injury time, with Dan Gosling firing Ake's pass high into the net. Bournemouth poured forward in injury time in search for a winner but Newcastle held on for the point.
